Social mobility - a concept that needs examining

This is one of those phrases that makes me wince a bit. It's usually coupled with reference to Oxbridge and other such institutions. Now of course there 100% should be fair access. And we 1000% need more people from minority backgrounds in power... but putting this aside for a moment why does power have to follow what is essentially the white upper class model of privilege?

What about those who can't access such careers because their interests and talents are in other areas? 'Social mobility' exacerbates the drive towards ever increasing emphasis on 'academic' qualifications which for so many young people are not achievable or desirable.

What does social mobility mean? It implies moving up the social hierarchy therefore continuing to privilege power, wealth and social status over other human experiences and values. Does that mean those in more manual or lower paid positions should simply not expect or deserve the power and privilege that comes with high earning professions?

There is also an element of moral judgement attached; as if we should all be aiming for this 'improvement'. Doesn't this also put unequal pressure on those from minority communities who are often the subject of social mobility discussions?

So much to think about here. These things are worth exploring.
